Office Emergency System

The building that I work in has an overhead public address system in place to let us know when there is an emergency in the area, and when we need to evacuate the building.

It’s no secret that the building that I work in had at one point in time had a very high amount of visible security in place due to an “ongoing” and “real” terrorist threat, and yet somehow our public address system is flawed to the point that even during an emergency they don’t tell us about it, despite the fact that they should, as well as the fact that they remind us about how they can use the P.A. system during an emergency each month during our fire drills.

So when the mysterious click of the overhead loudspeaker just went on a few minutes ago, no one spoke, instead we all sat wondering what might be going on, or if anything is wrong.

Hoping that we weren’t sitting ducks we looked out the windows and saw nothing, but then again we can’t see 500 feet directly below us to know what if anything is going on anywhere down there.

Part of me wonders how long it would take for a reader to walk to 53rd Street, look directly East on the Manhattan grid, and then report back what, if anything is wrong with the building that they see.  I’m betting that the reader reporting what might be wrong would probably come faster than anything over the public address system.

btw, I can’t wait to get out of office life.

  1. Just call me, and I’ll just stick my head out of the window of my office and look east.
