Friday night as I was passing a smoothie place on St. Marks (as if that wasn’t gross enough) I noticed this outdoor display of free smoothie samples.
They were right out on the sidewalk to the point that in order to walk on the sidwalke you need to step around them slightly, THAT’s how close they are to people, and that block of St. Marks is a block with EXTREMELY heavy foot and vehicle traffic.Â
People coughing, sneezing, spitting, flipping their hair and whatnot very near to the open display. Not the mention the pigeons flying around, and various exhaust from all of the vehicles. My immediate thoughts were “DISGUSTING!”.
Just then as I whipped out my cellphone camera to snap a shot of the display a man and woman saw the very same disgusting public and unsanitary display of smoothie and shouted, “OOH YEAH!” and each grabbed one taste test and popped it in their mouths like a delicious shot of Maker’s Mark.Â
I turned around with my tongue falling out of my mouth, trying not to dry heave, and said, “Awww poor things.” “Why?” “Cause they’re drinking smoothies…”.Â
Then, I snapped that above first shot, then turned quick and took this shot…
It’s the back of the man and woman who each in their own rights have very low taste as far as what they should accept for free.Â
Shame on them…

I thought there might be alcohol in those there smoothies, which would have made it *almost* acceptable. Almost…
That place *always* has free smoothie samples out there. Sometimes, they even have a cute asian girl handing them out. Incidentally, that place also has really tasty soups and you get a free banana with your order.
(I used to work on St. Marks, so I know all the good places for food down there, as long as they were around three years ago)
I drank those!
They tasted strawberry delicious!
Todd, you shamed me with this…
The very next day, we were back there again and Chris took one! I said they were probably left over from the night before, but he swears it was a different flavor.
Which means he had 2. In less than 24 hours. (shudder)
Even if it wasn’t a day old smoothie sample, it’s still out in the nastiest of nasty air and whatever…YUCK!
Funny: I too was walking by there on Saturday afternoon, and my friend and I both noticed the smoothie samples. We both had the same reaction: That is one of the more disgusting things I have ever seen after nearly 25 years in this City. Nasty.
Near my old job they didnt have free smoothy samples, but a fried fish joint that would have some poor girl slicing it up and asking people if they wanted to try it. Ordinarily street fish would frighten me but she looked so sad standing there I would give it a sample any time I passed around the lunch hour. It smelled good but I never saw myself as wanting more than the sample portion. Oh well. Im not down there anymore to give it a shot. I do miss Yips though. They were my mainstay.
