I thought that I had heard it all after having endured an extremely unhealthy nine month relationship with a Dominican gal and the years of mindf*ck that followed – seriously, buy the book one day!
Then came today…no, that ex didn’t contact me (thankfully) with anything, but my coworker who happens to be a Dominican gal did contact me about something over the top.
She was talking about how she doesn’t like regular oatmeal, but loved Dominican oatmeal. I asked what the difference was because I enjoy regular oatmeal now and then when I’m too lazy to make dinner and or too lazy to go out to pick something up.
She informed me…”You put the oatmeal in a pot, add water, cook it, then strain out all of the oats, and drink the oatmeal.”
WTF?!?!?!
My mouth dropped and head shook with disbelief since I literally hadn’t heard of anything so crazy and stupid in such a very long time.
I informed her that that was in no way oatmeal, to which she hastily replied that it was indeed oatmeal, more so that it was real oatmeal, and that if it wasn’t oatmeal, what was it?
I countered by saying that it might be able to be considered oatmeal juice or extract, but both might be stretching both words; say you steam carrots, and when you’re done cooking them, instead of eating the carrots you toss them in the trash and drink the water that was steaming it. Would that be eating carrots?
She looked stupefied, and her reply was, “What about juice? Isn’t orange juice the same as eating an orange?”
No, no it is not, nor is it even the same thing as drinking the water that cooked the oatmeal…and I then offered to sell her the Brooklyn Bridge.
The whole unbelievable conversation and interaction was straight out of four years ago and it sure made me realize and appreciate that I’m glad that regular conversations of complete stupidity like that one are loooong gone!

OK – just started reading your blog, and I’m already hooked.
Of course this could be the start of a very successful line of Beehive Hairdresser Cookbooks or Diets. “Carrot Juice Diet”, “Dominican Oatmeal Diet” and the like. Not sure if “Hot Dog Water Diet” would work out but one never knows, either way the possibilities are endless.
Yeah- that’s almost as absurd as boiling coffee beans, then throwing them away, drinking the remaining water, and calling it “coffee”.
You seemed to miss the whole point about eating and drinking bring two different things. Eat some coffee beans and tell me that it is the same as drinking coffee.
What i really find hard to believe is that you dare to write about food and food in other countries and culture and dont even take the time to do a little reasearch on it. As a person who works in a 1970 room resort where we receive people from allover and therefore serve food from allover, i strongly suggest NEVER LEAVE YOUR HOMETOWN you might be chocked by all the diversity out there and how when it comes to food no one owns the truth.
Well, if ‘working at a 1970 room resort’ qualifies as being intelligent about the stupidity of others, then where do we sign up?
Also, we’ll try our best to stay in our narrow-minded hometown of New York City. You’re welcome.
LOL. I came across this while looking for a recipe for dominican oatmeal. Actually, it is oatmeal. The oatmeal is soaked in water for a while, then blended in a blender. Most people then cook the blended oatmeal with evaporated milk , sugar cinnamon, and cloves. Some people, however strain the oatmeal after the blending step to have a more liquid-y drink. Maybe the girl in spoke with was referring to the latter. Personally, I avoid this step because your basically just removing the fiber.
This is actually a very common Dominican recipe…it’s called Avena. And yes, it is oatmeal.
