Coolness!!!

Last year on a whim I bought an elephant ear bulb, planted it, and hoped for the best with it. Success was had and I ended up with huge elephant ear leaves. Then in the fall I cut up all the leaves, began a compost bin with them and then went to dig up the bulb to store for the winter and found that the one bulb turned into many bulbs.
I kept and planted the one new bulb that looked biggest and strongest to me and gave away the others while not knowing if I would actually get this new bulb to grow. Low and behold a squirrel spent about 15 minutes a couple of weeks back devouring much of that once healthy looking elephant ear bulb while I ate my breakfast and I thought that I would be out of luck when it came to elephant ear this year, but not so…
The little bulb that could has begun to sprout some giant leaves. Just look at the underside of that one! Dare I say it, but that is one sexy underside of a leaf if there ever is one. It’s roughly the size of my torso, and if you look at the stem you can see the beginnings of another leaf all rolled up and ready to say hello to the world…TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

that’s giant! and gorgeous! you’re lucky the squirrel apparently didn’t eat enough.
That is the sexiest leaf underside I’ve ever laid eyes, on, I think it’s safe to say. I myself have the hottest hostas this side of the Missippi.
I’m pretty sure you already know this but another thing that’s pretty cool about this type of plant is that it repells water. It’ll just bead up and roll off and if you submerge it in water it’ll come out completely dry. I thought that was pretty cool.
I love the beads, and I never thought of submerging/dunking it in water to take a look.
I wishi I had more room for a really giant version of the elephant ear. The one were the leaves are five or six feet…drools…
