This is photo of the group of storefronts is located on 5th Avenue near 88th Street, just a couple of buildings down from the OTB Gore Tour Stop # 11.
The building in the middle (with the blue awning) is where I used to get my hair butchered haircut when I was a kid. It is now a nail salon of sorts.
The storefront itself isn’t the stop we want, the true gore happened on the second and third floors above the store.
On December 26, 2007 George Staziak was horrifically murdered above the store in the scene that spanned both floors. His murderer was his roommate, Remiguisz Kwas.
Staziak was attacked inside of the second floor apartment that he shared with Kwas, and then tried to escape his attacker by running up to the third floor where he banged on the door for help.
A woman inside her apartment looked through the peephole and watched as Kwas stabbed Staziak repeatedly in the chest and neck.
Eventually someone from a third floor apartment opened the door, allowing Staziak to stagger and collapse on the bathroom floor – this opened door also allowed Kwas to enter the apartment, where he was able to calmly lay down on a bed where police found him.
Staziak died at Lutheran Medical Center.
