Death Of A Victorian

There’s an old and dilapidated Victorian house in my neighborhood at 245 83rd Street that is a real shame.

The three story plus attic house has long since given the appearance of being an abandoned house on a street that is lined with million dollar homes - pre housing bubble.

Years ago when it still had windows and a door of sorts I had thought of living there in a squat to own situation.
A couple of weeks ago I took a walk over and found that the old Victorian had been stripped of all windows and doors, as well as found out that the property has been fenced off completely with a shoddy plywood wall.

Seeing as how the house has had it’s chance to be refurbished many times over in the past few decades of economic booms and never was, I looked into the buildings department to see what was up with the place - especially since the owners wanted their driveway to still get treated as one and the fact that people receive mail here.

Turns out the plywood wall surrounding the place is illegal due to the permit for it having expired in 2007, but I’d much rather the illegal plywood wall than have any and every skell in Brooklyn in there.
The owners have since been brought up on two fines of four thousand dollars each in fines for this - they could have just renewed the permit!
The buildings department also has records of permits issued years ago to expand the home that never had any construction come about.
There’s plenty of room underneath the plywood fence for photography, as you can see…the owner seems to be trying to allow nature to due his bidding desire of tearing the place down.

The buildings department has on file an approved application for FULL DEMOLITION!!!
As one would guess…there’s some major league faults in the approved permit..i.e. complete and utter misleading and non-facts listed on the permit.
The approved permit is for full demolition of a one story, 20 foot high structure that sits on a property which has 25 feet of street frontage, well, as you can gather from the photos, the house is actually a three story plus attic structure that is way taller than 20 feet and the house sits on roughly 100 feet of street frontage.
Given that this property has been in violation of illegal fencing for nearly a year and all of the inaccuracies of the approved full demolition permit, this property is the quintessential example of how the buildings department permits, laws and regulations are half a joke and how property owners of this city are almost always trying to pull one over on everyone else for no apparent good reason.

That is really so sad, the house is so amazing and has such potential if someone would just love it up a tad.

Another Bay Ridge Teardown…
The Green Church ain’t the only casualty of a preservation antipathy in Bay Ridge. Local blog Beehive Hairdresser sounds the alarm about the teardown of an old Victorian house at 245 83rd Street. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s a day……

Wow, what a shame — like Jossie said, it has great potential — although at least it could be the perfect condemned Halloween haunted house. But, really, that’s no excuse!
