I Hate NYC #29 Black People Time

NYC is a fast paced city where people live and die by the clock.  Most want to get to and from places as fast as can be simply because there is so much to see and do all over the place.

In order to get the most out of the day, one needs to warp through Black People Time (BPT).

BPT is not used by all black people, nor is it used only by black people.

BPT transcends race, gender, creed, sexuality - everything.  While some can argue that it is more prevalent in black people, it tends to only get noticed in black people - and some black people take ownership to the phrase BPT.

BPT is basically just living in your own bubble, a bubble that happens to be a gagillion times slower than most people around you.

For instance, say your small town in Iowa moves at a speed of 5, and your average New Yorker moves a speed of 10, people running on BPT run at the speed of .02.

Navigating through the subway and streets behind people living in BPT is an extremely frustrating situation that one needs to deal with on a daily basis in NYC.

There are two ways to get around this:

a) Silently sped up, around and through people on BPT.

Or,

b) Say something that may or may not get you in trouble like, “Come on black people.  Let’s move it.”  I’ve seen both work without incident, although option A tends to be the easiest for most (including myself) and safest.

  1. I’ve heard anyone use “BPT”, I’ve only heard about CPT=Colored People Time.
I time zone I’ve lived in all my life.

  2. I BPT it all the time. Except for when I’m running from the cops. I double BPT it, then.
