Lately we’ve found ourselves wondering who is interred in NYC, where they are interred and how they are interred – one such person that we sought out to find was Peter Stuyvesant.

Stuyvesant is just like many of the people in history books, he had his good and bad character flaws, and helped shaped NYC and the land that eventually became the United States – he was the last Dutch Governor and he authorized the wall to be built where modern day Wall Street is – how’s THAT!!!
Anyway, to our surprise he is interred in a fairly plain vault grave at St. Marks Church on 10th Street and 2nd Avenue in the modern day East Village.
Not only that, but we’ve actually walked past his vault numerous times and was even part of a show at the church a couple of years ago – we had no idea he was there.

The large stone underneath the sign that today is part of a pathway appears to be the entrance.

Finding this spot made us feel as though we had just found One-Eyed Willy - we even talked to ourselves…”There you are…we knew we’d find you…”
