Green Church Demolition Update!

It’s been well over six months since the historic United Methodist Church aka the “Green Church” was demolished after a couple of years of what to many looked like extremely shady dealings between the church, realtors, developers and the city.

The new smaller church/condo construction project that was supposed to come about on the site fell through and more recently the NYC Board of Education announced plans to build a new school at the location.

I’ve passed the construction site several times over the past couple of weeks and noticed that the old church school building on the site was being demolished.  I passed yesterday and took this photo of it.

I figured that this post would just be a simple update that the school construction might be starting soon since the demolition of the old school building was coming along just fine was what I had in mind, and then I spotted this Stop Work Order.

Yes, a Stop Work Order happened to have been issued earlier in the day!

According to the DOB website the Stop Work Order was issued due to excavation/demolition on the site undermining an adjacent building!

And there is an outstanding $8,000.00 fine against the property due to inspectors having found work being done on May 9, 2009 without a permit.

After all of what could be argued by many in the community as the shady dealings when it came to this site, the news of the $8,000.00 fine (which won’t get collected for decades) and the shoddy construction shouldn’t come as a surprise.

I think we should all just cross our fingers and hope that when the school building gets built it won’t be done in such a shoddy and inefficient manner as the demolition has been done.

  1. I surely hope they get everything order because we all need schools and more places for people to learn. That’s crazy that they got to stop working and pay for the fine. All well that ends well… well hoping it ends well because all is not well with so much money to pay.

  2. So is the SCA building this school? If so, then this is typical of how the City operates.

  3. From what I read it appears as though the developer who wanted to build condos is currently building it, or is at least doing the construction that is presently going on there.

  4. OK Guys – lets get this right:

The same demolition company that demolished the church, “CAVALIER CONSTRUCTION CORP,” is the company demolishing the OLD school building. They are the ones with the Stop Work Orders and the Violations.

The SCA will be building the NEW School on an empty site.

The BAYRIDGE METHODIST CHURCH is still the owner of the property.
