The Job Hunt

by beehive on Jul.19, 2009, under Uncategorized

As I try to figure out what my next move will be as far as getting paid regularly for honest work (unfortunately my writing isn’t covering the bills) I realize that I would much rather be struck by lightning than go back to work for a banking institution - if I could sell my Series 7 & Series 66 licenses that I worked so hard to obtain I would, but that’s illegal, so I’m S.O.L. with them.

Believe it or not, people don’t grow up wanting to work in a stuffy, poorly lit workplace full of people who essentially took a wrong turn in life and found themselves 12 - 25 years later STILL working for a bank doing mind blowing tedious activities that involve mountains of paperwork (literally 85 cubic feet of paperwork a day) which fry their brain from the rest of the world.

Yes, the banking world is full of things and types of people that I want to stay far and away from.

The best job I ever had was working in a data center doing telecommunications work (WAN side) - it was a job where I learn tons of skills that unfortunately have slipped away over the last ten years.  I installed equipment, tested them and then would troubleshoot things when something broke down in the system.  All of which was done in an actual team environment where people realized what had to be done and helped each other achieve the greater goals of the team to get everything done.

I had started as an intern for two summers and then went part time for about a year before I left to pursue other things in life.

Little did the 18 year old me realize that such a job where you learn new things, are on your feet, are around people who genuinely love what they do and getting to use your brain to solve critical problems at the fastest pace possible isn’t a job that comes around often.

Anyway, while looking through job ads I’ve noticed that most jobs can be classified into but a few categories: Why?  Scam!  Shoot me!  Who in their right mind?  and Requires Specific Knowledge (doctor, lawyer, architect, etc.)

All of them are essentially not what I’m looking for.

I really just wish that I could find a job ad out there that has this type of description:

Fast paced working environment seeks entry level person who doesn’t know anything in said field, can learn, wants to learn, is willing to be molded into best possible worker for said position, is capable, reliable, is good on their feet, won’t be sitting at a desk all day and wants to join our team where 99% of the people are genuinely happy with what they do for a living and will help teach you how to become a full member of the team.

It’s a naive long shot of an advertisement and I’m not holding my breath.
