Finding a free parking spot on the street is a difficult thing to do in NYC, especially in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
So, I cannot help but feel annoyed at the fact that at least one used car dealer in Pennsylvannia is using the streets of Bay Ridge as a place to store and advertise their vehicles.
Two weeks ago a guy parked a Mercury Villager on my block, removed the license plates and left the car on the street with white letters on the windows indicating that it was for sale – with a 718 contact number.
After four days of looking at the car that had no legal right being on the street due to it not having license plates or an inspection sticker I called 311 to have it removed.
311 informed me that if the car had no license plates it had no business being parked on the street and that the sanitation department would tow it away.
The next morning I woke up to find a gray haired sanitation worker double parked beside the Villager. The sanitation dude made some phone calls and worked on his laptop as he inspected the vehicle. After about 30 minutes of work he drove off never to be seen again.
Seven hours later a man drove up to the car, wiped the “for sale” info off of it and placed PA dealer license plates on it.
Since it wasn’t test driven or even looked at under the hood, the obvious conclusion is that the car was in fact belonging to the PA dealer the entire time. I saw several others since then and only yesterday finally got to snap some photos of yet another car that appears to be the work of the PA dealership.

It too was parked on the street without any license plates or inspection stickers – 91st at 4th Ave to be exact.

It too was for sale and marked with a 718 area code as the contact number.

This one has some damage to it though. Tape is holding the rear bumper together.

The entire driver’s side has scrapes on it, the front left tire is flattened and there is some damage to the front bumper as well.

And here’s the kicker: IT HAS PBA & MARCHALLS CARDS IN IT!!!

Now while I cannot say for certain that this vehicle belongs to a PA dealership using shady practices of ditching a car in Brooklyn in hope of selling it (although it suspiciously looks as though it is), I can say for certain that this is a clear abuse of law enforcement and one of the reasons why PBA cards are complete BS items that should be outlawed to stop such abuses against the general public.
It is clear that this is not a law enforcement vehicle, and yet because the owner of this vehicle either knows a cop or is a cop, they get that special privilege of not having to obey the law like everyone else is supposed to.
And for the record, when reporting this vehicle to 311 they informed us that the Department of Sanitation will only remove the vehicle if the DOS feels it is appropriate, with a PBA card in the window, my guess is that they will let it slide – but we will never know for certain, because 311 does not give out any type of reference numbers for cases of abandoned vehicles, we can never look this up for a follow up.
