Brooklyn’s Best Cupcake!

Cupcakes, like pizza, are a touchy subject for many New Yorkers.  Everyone has their favorites and their reasons behind said favorites are usually unbending to the point of blind rage.

Most people use the cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery as the barometer for cupcake reference.  Most everyone has had a Magnolia cupcake or has heard about it through Sex and the City.

If you’ve never had a Magnolia cupcake; they look exquisite — seriously impeccable looking top — but their taste doesn’t come close to measuring up to the high bar that the presentation makes.

The bottoms of their cupcakes tend to be far too dry for our pallets and their tops aren’t moist or flavorful enough to compensate for the excessively dry bottom.  All in all, Magnolia cupcakes are nothing for us to write home about…and seriously not worth the wait on long line – but try telling that to somebody who thinks Grimaldi’s has the best pizza in the world.

Anyway, for the past several years we’ve gladly lived close to the Little Cupcake Bakeshop in Brooklyn and while their cupcake presentation is nowhere near as fresh, crisp or as ‘Hollywood’ as Magnolia’s are, they sure do taste a heck of a lot better than Magnolia; and taste is all that matters to us.

Little Cupcake Bakeshop had been our Brooklyn cupcake of choice, but things have changed – we tried Robicelli’s and good God they blow the Little Cupcake Bakeshop out of the water!

We picked up a carrotcake cupcake from Robicelli’s and this is how their single to go works:

An upside-down clear solo cup that makes your cupcake appear to be a museum piece.  Yes, it does draw attention to oneself — almost to the point that point that people assume that you are a severely slow adult who was allowed out without having to wear your protective helmet.

The Robicelli’s cupcake has a deliciously moist bottom plus a top that tastes so good that too much saliva gets released which overpowers ones salivary ducts to the point that the first bite hurts a little from too much delicious greatness.

At the end of the day Robicelli’s wins out over Little Cupcake in the Battle of Brooklyn cupcakes, with the cupcakes from the Sade General Store in Long Island City remaining king by way or both great taste, presentation and plump sized cupcakes.

  1. They do have amazing cupcakes at Robicelli’s, but I’ll still enjoy the red velvet at Little Cupcake. Also, they’re more affordable, especially if you’re buying in large quantities. (Large = more than two)

I’ll still visit both when I’m in the neighborhood.

  2. True on the cost per cupcake. I think Little Cupcake sells at .50 less than Robicelli’s with Little Cupcake’s being bigger — but Robicelli’s won me over on taste.

  3. Totally agree. I really want to try the Car Bomb. But you’d better enjoy them while you can (or get ready for on-line ordering).

  4. Yes, I heard the sad news too. I might have to stop in the place on 87th off of 3rd (bet. 3rd and Ridge) and see if they see individuals or only do bulk orders.

  5. Hey Beehive Hairdresser!

I am SO happy you liked our cupcakes! Hearing things like this reminds me why I do what I do- you totally made my day.

Just to let everyone know, our cupcakes WILL still be available in Bay Ridge! Beginning on Saturday, November 14th, you will be able to buy them at HOM Boutique and Cafe on 88th Street and 3rd.

Keep up with our Facebook page to find out where else we’ll be! And thank you so much for coming in, and for supporting local business!
