Esperanto Cafe Closes With Irony

by beehive on Mar.02, 2010, under Economy Fail Watch

We were shocked to learn that the popular Manhattan coffee shop, Esperanto Cafe, on MacDougal Street has closed down due to an apparent fued between cafe owners and the building landlord.

We’ve enjoyed a time or two at this spot.  That said, with it being closed it has left MacDougal Street full of irony…

Hopefully that touch of irony is enough to sooth to soul of the various writers who would go to Esperanto way in the middle of the night to do their thing in a friendly environment.  Other than that we imagine that Alanis Morissette is giddy at the ironic value here.

Is there a 24-hour coffee shop remaining in NYC that remotely resembles this place? I can only find diners calling themselves coffee shops.

Sorry Jonathan. We don’t know of anywhere in NYC that is even close to Esperanto that operates 24 hours.

I too was shocked to see it closed. I’ve been searching for weeks for anything comparable in the area, with no success. It will be missed.
