NYC Map Mosaic

It always amazes us that we can pass something 1,000 times and never quite notice it, and then on the 1,001st time we actually see it.  This is exactly what happened with the police station in the middle of Times Square.

There’s this beautiful mosaic map of New York City on it — albeit a confusing map of New York City — that we’ve never realized was there before.

The map contains the five main components of New York City: Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island on it, but it’s not quite right.

Staten Island is labeled by its county name: Richmond, as is Queens and the Bronx, with Queens and the Bronx also being their borough names.  However, Brooklyn and Manhattan are labeled by their respective borough names — not their county names of Kings (Brooklyn) and New York (Manhattan).

It sure as heck makes us wonder what map the artist was given of NYC and wonder if the artist has ever even stepped foot in New York.

  1. It sure as heck makes me wonder how young you are, or how long you’ve been in NYC. SI was the Borough of Richmond until 1975.

  2. Lifelong Brooklynite, went to high school in Staten Island (shudder) and was born near 1975. Thanks for the archaic piece of lost NYC knowledge.

  3. Also, apologies go out to the artist.

  4. Sigh. I live in Hell’s Kitchen, oops, sorry, Clinton….no I mean HK….the new Far West Side? And it will always be Sixth Avenue to me. Will Paul and Art change to The Ed Koch Bridge Song?
