Daisy!  With a tiny ant on one of the white petals…

daisy.jpg

I love having daisies in my garden.  I have three different types of daisies so that I can get several months worth of bloom each year.

These first bloomers were just wonderful this year and I’ve already harvested some of their seeds before cutting off the rest of the spent blooms.  Five plus weeks of sexy blooms is TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

After a week full of laptop problems that had me thinking that Coolness!!! this week would be in danger I finally fixed the problem and was able to upload this cool shot of a bumble bee zipping up up and away!

I just love how his legs are drooping down while his body is jumping up.  TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

A couple of weeks ago when I had dozens of blooming iris flowers I kept watching a bunch of big fat bumble bees.

bee-on-an-iris.jpg

This one bee that is in the above photo went to just about every single open bloom and crawled through them for extra goodies.

Now that bloom was huge in real life and that bee was about an inch in length, just look at it all in all of its glory!  TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

I spotted my first butterfly of 2008 a couple of weeks ago and it was glorious!

It was hanging out dipping itself into the many many many rhododendron blooms that I had while big giant bumble bees were zipping around all over. It was…TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

Here’s a shot of a big ball of an allium bloom.

That bee kept flying and attacking this ball with great fury.  It was TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

I’m officially in the middle of crazy arse bee season in my backyard.  With the hive of these big fat bumble bees roughly ten feet up off the ground it’s truly amazing to have a plethora of bees flying around antagonizing one another for better access to the blooms of my garden.  Check out this one that was part of the giant orgy on my seven foot tall rhododendron

And check out the pattern of those blossoms to boot!!  Everything together is TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

There’s been some cool things that I’ve seen out of my window of late that I’ve been trying to capture in the form of a photo.  Namely two blue jays that have been hanging out lusting after one another, a four or so inch black bird with orange or yellow (I forget) vertical stripes that I’ve never seen before, a cardinal trying to catch a bee, and then there was this…

squirrel-with-cookie.jpg

Yes!  That is a squirrel and it has a big cookie in its mouth as it scurried across the telephone cables.  I have no idea where it obtained the cookie from, but it looked so cool.  It was TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

Over the weekend there was some early morning rain over in my neighborhood.  By the time I woke up it was over, gone, and the sun was still hiding behind the clouds.  Everything had some form of dew on it, leaving most flying insects hanging around waiting for their wings to dry off to fly once again.

That’s how I found these two flies

They were staying as still as still could be, not flinching with the flash, and just hanging out on the wooden trellis - TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

Take a look at this here plant whose name I completely forget.

A month ago the naked eye could barely see any of the new green growth popping up out from the ground - but it’s alive and growing -TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

As I strolled down near the Narrows I looked up the hill and found this squirrel sitting on top of a tree stump.

squirrel-on-tree-stump.jpg

He was just sitting there and looked to be enjoying the spring air.  Based on its location there’s a good chance that the stump is what remains of a tree after the tornado last summer.  Glad to see the squirrel still gets good use out of the tree - TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

Ahhh….it’s mid spring, and with it brings full enjoyment of flowering bulbs.  Check out this simply deliciously scented hyacinth

hyacinth.jpg

Some flowers amaze me with how good they can smell, while others make me want to hurl (corpse flower).

Since it’s spring and there’s so much to show (lots more) I thought I’d give you all a two-for-one today with this bright eyed tulip

tulip-2008.jpg

Just look at how wide open it is.  I don’t think that it could get any wider, and this bloom still looks to have plenty of life in it, as it is still closing up at night.  Just look at all that pollen in there…TOTAL COOLNESS!!

Last weekend I was tackling some garden clean up in the form of redoing the border that touches my neighbors yard by driving metal spikes to prevent ground / pavers from shifting into their yard.  So as I was tooling around and clearing some leaves I found this…

bee-fossil.jpg

It’s a the dried body of a bee.  That’s right, it’s a dead and hollowed out shell of a bee.  He still had complete definition of all his features with exception to a visible stinger no there, but his pollen pouches were still there!!

I found his shell near the patch of bee balm

bee-atop-bee-balm.jpg

So these two bees pictured could quite possibly be in fact one in the same - COOLNESS!!!

Spring is really getting into its rhythm nowadays, take a look at the first (and second) daffodil blooms I’ve had so far this spring.

I never noticed the white tips before until I took photos of them.  They’re flippin’ beautiful.  Total coolness!!!

On Saturday afternoon I stepped out my front door and found bees flying through the air and down into the garden.

Take a look…

1st-bee-of-2008.jpg

That’s the absolute first bee that I’ve seen in the year 2008.  I’ve never noticed the first time in a year that such an event has happened, but it’s happened.

This little guy was awesome.  He kept touching the green bell atop the snowbell that’s directly to the right of the blooming purple crocus.  My assumption is that there’s some small amount of pollen, or something that attracts the bees into thinking that it’s pollen - cause it sure as heck looks as though nothing is there.

Anyway, the first bee of 2008…TOTAL COOLNESS!!!
