Brooklyn’s Best Grasshopper

We know that most gardeners fear an invasion of grasshoppers to their plot of earth, but we welcome them in our neck of Brooklyn.

If we had hundreds, or thousands, or hundreds of thousands of grasshoppers in our tiny yard we’d probably be in the same boat as those who fear them, but we usually only spot one in our garden per year.

This is it for this year… TOTAL COOLNESS!!!

The Giant Bee

We’ve noticed many new types of visitors to our garden since NYC reversed law and made it legal for beekeepers to do their thing in NYC. While seeing honeybees for the first time in years is cool, seeing this monster is just as cool.

He looked as though he was a bumble bee that was either jacked up on roids or an evolutionary tweak in the bee population that was suffering from gigantism — though he could simply be a much larger species of bee that we’re unfamiliar with.

To put it simply, this bee was HUGE!!! Its body and wingspan were roughly an inch or more in length and width to the point where it made the usually larger bumble bees look tiny. Thankfully, just as larger dogs tend to be more docile, so too was this giant bee.  Nothing seemed to bother it… TOTAL COOLNESS!!!
