3rd Avenue and 9th Street in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn is about where a regiment of Maryland troops held back British forces during the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Brooklyn as the bulk of the American forces retreated. Those Maryland troops suffered a catastrophic amount of casualties, but allowed for the successful retreat of their brothers in arm. The dead where buried in a swamp in what is now considered a toxic waterway.
