The other day while waiting for a D train to Brooklyn on West 4th Street we found ourselves perplexed by this visual.

This is the locked gates to the abandoned staircase at the north end of the platform that once went from the lower level to the mezzanine and has long since been covered/roofed over at the top of the stairs.
The stairs remain and so do the gates. In theory, one could unlock the gate and walk up to nothing but a ceiling.
Since this abandoned staircase is at the far end of the platform it is out of the public eye for the most and is likely a prime location for drunk folks to relieve themselves out of view while waiting for the late night trains. (Not that we’re encouraging such things.)
Yet this visual makes us wonder, how many people must have relieved themselves on the right side of that gate in order for it to have disintegrated completely at the bottom like that?
Crazy!
