The Art Of Losing

After using the restroom inside of the Prospect Park Zoo, we tried to wash our hands, but couldn’t get water to come out of this faucet.

Since there were zero knobs to turn the water on, we put our hands beneath the faucet, hoping that water would come out.  When that didn’t work, we waved our hands beneath it, hoping that it would be turned on via a motion detector that needed a lot of motion.  When that didn’t work, we took a closer look and saw that the faucet said “speakman” so we did just that.

“Water on.”  Nothing.

“Seriously, turn the water on!”  Still nothing.

This caused us to lean in closer and shout, “TURN THE WATER ON, PLEASE!  YOU SAY SPEAKMAN SO WE’RE SPEAKING BUT YOU AREN’T LISTENING!!!”  Yet again, nothing, so we snapped this photo of the unfazed and stubborn water faucet, the one that does not bow to motions, or voice.

Ants Marching

This is a macro shot of some ants inside of a freshly watered bluebell flower.

Oddly enough, it reminds us of the charity coin bins.  The kind that makes the coin turn around and around, going faster and faster as it gets closest to the bottom.

A Post Sunset Glow

This is what happens when you trust the internet for what time the sun will set.

It is almost always two to five minutes off with the sun setting earlier than the times listed.

We saw the best sunset in weeks through the trees, but by the time we ran down to snap a shot of it, gone… and in its place was a decent post sunset glow.

Hudson’s Poop River

As of late last night it had rained for roughly 24 hours straight here in Brooklyn.  During that time there were times of heavy rain from thunderstorms and it only stopped raining overnight.

Earlier this afternoon we headed down to the 69th Street Pier in Bay Ridge and found a truly gross site, the NYC water treatment facility was, from our view, surrounded by water that appeared to be the brown kind that one flushes down the toilet.

This is because some genius thought that it was a good idea to connect boththe pipes that collect sewage from homes, businesses and apartment buildings with the very same pipes that collect all of the run off from the corner storm drains.

The effect, just about whenever it rains in NYC, the raw sewage treatment facilities are flooded and as a consequence are forced to send untreated waste water out into the surrounding rivers.  (The New York Times had a great article about it several years back.)

Anyway, the above photo has the Owl’s Head water treatment facility on the far right, withLower Manhattan in the far background, Jersey City, NJ in the middle and the Hudson River where it connects with the Narrows in between.

We marked the photo with yellow dots to highlight the deviation line of where ‘normal water’ and ‘poop water’ is – with the poop water being everything that was closest to us.  Can you see difference in water?

Oddly enough, despite there being a literal river of poop around the pier, the pier still had about ten men with their fishing poles in the water.

The pier should have a sign that says, “Only fish here if you left your common sense at home!”

The Verrazano Bridge Sunset

We hope that you take some time to get on out and enjoy the tranquility of some nice weather today.

This is a shot of the Verrazano Bridge at sunset from a week or so ago.
